The Power of Commitment in B2B Marketing and Sales (by Chris Ryan)

I just read an interesting post by Perry Marshall (the PPC guru) at www.perrymarshall.com.  Perry received an email from copywriter John Fancher talking about how Bob Dylan received so many great ideas for the hundreds of songs he wrote. Being a Dylan fan myself, this peaked my interest. Also, since I write a fair amount of copy for my clients, I am always on the hunt for great ideas.  Apparently, up until the time he wrote his first song, Bob Dylan had serious doubts about his ability to be a songwriter.  How did he overcome his doubt and start producing?  It’s simple, he wrote his first song. This was hard but he pushed through to completion, then he wrote his second song.  Before long he had more ideas than he had time to write.

What does this have to do with B2B marketing and sales? Good question. Whatever it is that you are putting off doing because it is too hard, BEGIN IT NOW.  I promise that it won’t be as hard the second time, or the third or fourth.  If you commit, and if you persist, you will make progress regardless of whether you are writing songs, learning a new marketing skill, calling prospects or whatever else. I have learned this lesson as a book writer.  I just released my fourth book (How to Create an Unstoppable Marketing and Sales Machine).  Was it hard?  Yes.  Was it as hard as the first book?  No way. I’m a better and faster writer because I made the commitment to write, just like Bob Dylan.  People often ask, Chris how can I write a book?  My answer is always the same: stop thinking about doing it and start writing.  The book isn’t going to write itself and the creative muse often strikes after the effort has begun.  Try it out, you’ll be happy you did so.

Chris, this post is right on target. I’ve seen many marketing initiatives ruined by a lack of commitment.

    Chris

    Congratulations on launching your company.

Great blog post and your advice is right on. We get too caught up in trying to perfect things in our heads. A bias for action helps sorts things out.

Thanks for the comments Sunnny and Ajay. You are both correct. Let’s all go commit to something imporant.
